Moving day is one of the most anticipated and exciting days there is. Although you might want to race to the finish line, hand over the money and start unpacking your boxes, it's important to ask some key questions first. After all you don't know the ins and outs of this new home and you'll want to make sure that you know exactly what you are purchasing and where everything is. Before you sign on the dotted be sure to do your due diligence and ask these 4 questions. This will ensure that there are no freak surprises and the moving process will go as smoothly as possible.

1. Where are the sump pump, circuit breaker, and water shut off valve located?

These are the essential building blocks of your home so knowing where they are is key. If you ever need to locate them quickly you don't want to be running around your house like a chicken with your head cut off frantically looking for them. Also, ask the seller how each of them work. Not every circuit box is created equal and works exactly the same so have them educate you on how everything operates. Save yourself the future stress and ask these key questions beforehand.

2. Does the house have any quirks that I might need to anticipate moving forward?

Some people call them things to fix and others call it charm. It's definitely helpful to know about all of the small quirky things that make this house unique. Some houses have funky light switches, windows that stick, funny closets, random doors etc. Generally these are all special characteristics that add to the charm of the house and made you fall in love with it in the first place, but it's always good to know beforehand. Experts advise asking this question during the final walk through of the house.

3. Are there any problems (small or big) in the house that you've fixed in the past?

It is usually required that sellers openly disclose any current issues with the house and is provided in the disclosure statement, but problems in the past aren't always talked about. The more information about your new house you can have the better. Asking the seller this question in a non attacking manner and more out of true curiosity will yield the best and most honest results.

4. Do you have any items you'd like to leave in the house?

At the end of the buying process go ahead and ask the seller this question. When someone is moving they sometimes don't want to bring with them huge items such as a couch or stools or a bookshelf. They also might have small items such as lamps, paintings, or dish ware that they no longer want. You might luck out with couple awesome extra items for no extra charge. If you never ask you'll never know so why not!
