History of the Sawdust Festival

It all began in the 1960's when an infux of new artists moved to Laguna Beach and forever changed the traditional art scene. They brought fresh new ideas and wanted to display them for everyone to see. The festival started small, but quickly gained traction and over the years grew into one of the most popular summer art shows. Walter and Dorothy Funk, who owned a two-and-a-half acre eucalyptus grove on Laguna Canyon Road, offered to rent this land for the art grounds. This beautiful and hidden space is still the venue today because in 1972 the Sawdust board purchased the land from the Funk's for a price of $225,000. The growth of the Sawdust led to permanent staff and structures. The Sawdust is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about local Laguna Beach art by providing classes, workshops and demonstrations.

The Sawdust Art Festival continues to grow each year, but they maintain true to their original mission of providing unique, handmade arts and crafts. Set in the amazing eucalyptus grove, it has truly become a true icon in the Southern California world of art. Over 200 different artists are featured in this show ranging from pottery, jewelry, paintings, photography, clothing, woodwork, blown glass, delicious local food and drink, and SO much more! The festival is interactive and offers a variety of daily art demonstrations and classes for both kids and adults to try. There will also be live music featuring local bands and be sure to wear comfortable shoes because there's even dance lessons.
