Small apartments and houses are very common in an extremely desirable place to live in such as Newport Beach, California. Sacrificing square footage means less space, but it also means it's more affordable which is a good thing for people on a budget. The key is to be strategic when squeezing everything you own into one small space. Follow Balboa Realty's advice and you will love living in your apartment no matter what size it is!

1. Create A Storage Plan

First, take the time to go through all of the things you own and ask yourself the honest question "Do I really need to keep this item?". As a general rule, if you haven't wore it or used it in the past year it's probably time to donate it. One you have uncluttered your wardrobe and other items, draft out a plan as to how to organize all of you belongings in your apartment. Figuring out where things go will help prevent you from putting things haphazardly in places where they don't belong. Organize your closets and cupboards so that you always know where everything goes.

2. Pick Up After Yourself

Putting things away where they belong sounds simple, but many fail to hold themselves to it everyday. Do your dishes, dry them and put them away. This could be a real game changer. If you let them sit they will pile up and make the entire apartment look messier than it actually is. Set a timer for no more than 10 minutes and clean up the day's mess. If you do this daily, it will only take a few minutes and it keeps your apartment always looking clean and tidy. Don't wait for it to get out of control and overwhelming.

3. Use Vertical Space

When you can't go out sometimes the only thing you can do is go up. Investing in storage space can really make a difference and building floor to ceiling cabinets, dressers, and shelves are a huge space savior. Don't forget to use the entire space in a closet or wardrobe and get shoe racks for the bottom and jewelery and tie racks to hang on the sides. If there's space find a use for it.

4. Buy A Bedside Organizer

Having multiple uses for one item is key to saving space and staying organized. If you have space for a bedside table, get one that has multiple drawers to store all sorts of things. If there's no space, you can buy an organizer pouch to go between your mattress and box spring and hangs over. It can hold everything you need like the TV remote, books, glasses, pens, cell phone etc.
