1. Change The Locks

Safety first! Now that the house is officially yours, you'll want to make it completely your own. The past homeowners had keys to the house and so did everyone they gave spare keys too. There's a good chance that nothing bad would happen if you never changed the locks, but for peace of mind and complete safety, it's extremely important to make changing all of the locks in your house one of the very first priorities.

2. Document With Photos

Before you move all of your furniture, clothes and house decorations into your new it's important to take photos of everything. For people who are renting an apartment this is key because you want to have documentation of what the apartment looked like when you moved in so you can get your security deposit back. For people who have just moved into a house they bought, taking photos is necessary because walls, appliances, floors etc might have been damaged during the move out process for the previous owner. You might need to show these to the previous owner in order to get them to pay for the damage.

3. Quality Check

As you start the long process of unpacking your belongings, it's essential to check everything for breakage. Fingers crossed everything made it's way to your new house in perfect condition, but just in case you'll want to double check. There's a small window of time to report damaged goods if you've used a moving company so keep in mind this should be a priority. Also, make sure everything is working and in tip top shape such as appliances and if something is broken report it immediately.

4. Car Registration

It's quite common to move from state to state, so if that is the case for you, according to the law you will have to register your car in your new home state of residence. You are required to make this switch within 60 days of moving and if you fail to do so you might be forced to pay a fine. Along with a new car registration, you'll also need to get a new state driver's license which you can usually do a the same time at the DMV.
