History of the Balboa Fun Zone
Before we dive in, let’s look at where we came from. The Fun Zone has always lived up to its name! It all began in 1892 when Edward Abbott bought the land for just $1 an acre and created Abbott’s Landing, complete with a paddlewheel steamer called The Last Chance, cozy cottages, and the first pleasure dock in Newport Bay. As tourism took off with the arrival of the Red Car in 1906, “East Newport” became Balboa, and the area blossomed with attractions like the Pavilion, Pier, and Hotel.
Decades later, in 1936, Al Anderson transformed the waterfront into the beloved Fun Zone we know today, adding a Ferris wheel, merry-go-round, and arcade games that became local icons. Over the years, the property has changed hands and evolved, but its playful spirit remains the same. Now under the ownership of the Pyle family (longtime Newport Beach residents), the Fun Zone is set for a new chapter of seaside fun, keeping Abbott’s legacy alive for generations to come.
